How can you tell if wood is safe to use in a wood stove?
I was wondering because I have a lot of downed trees on my property and I want to harvest them this spring for use in my wood stove next winter. Can wood be too dry and/or old? How do I know if it’s too wet? Thanks in advance!
Only burn cured (dried) hardwood. If the trees have been down for awhile, they may be too deteriorated to be of use. If the wood is crumbling, it is too far gone
If the trees are green you should split it and leave it dry for about a year covered. It will burn when it’s green but it can tar up the chimney which can be a fire hazard. As far as being too dry I don’t think it can be. If the trees that are downed have lost their bark there is a good chance they are dry enough to burn right away.
